Courtney Shanade Salter, also known as Ari Lennox, a Washington, D.C.-based American singer/songwriter, was signed as the label's first female artist on Dreamville Records by J. Cole. Her debut EP Pho, released which was released on 21 October 2016 was released through Dreamville Records. Her career began to grow in recognition. Shea Butter Baby released her debut studio album on 7 May 2019. Ari Lennox began uploading her music on the internet in 2012 as she launched her debut mixtape called Five Finger Discount and debut EP Ariography In 2013. Ari Lennox continued uploading her songs online, including her self-released single Bound. The song was included in Omen's Elephant Eyes, from Sweat It Out, on July 21 the 21st of July, 2015. J. Cole asked her to work with him on Rihanna's references. In the following season, the music was played around Dreamville. Her announcement to be signed by Dreamville Records was made on December 8th.
